Here’s some of our most frequently asked questions. For more specific enquiries, please just give us a shout, we want to hear from you!
Who are Sultans of Fling?
Sultans of Fling are a trio of Scotland's top traditional musicians on fiddle, guitar and bagpipes. All three are deeply rooted in Scotland's folk scene and regularly perform at Celtic Connections.
Do our guests need to know the ceilidh dances?
Not at all. Every dance is called and demonstrated step by step, so guests who've never done the Gay Gordons or Strip the Willow are on the floor within minutes, without slowing down the experienced dancers.
Which dances do Sultans of Fling play?
Favourites include the Gay Gordons, Dashing White Sergeant, Military Two Step, Virginia Reel, St Bernard's Waltz, Flying Scotsman, Eightsome Reel, Circassian Circle and the Orcadian Strip the Willow.
Will the band pace the night for our guests?
Yes. They're known for reading a crowd well, building energy when the room needs it and easing off when guests need a breather. At smaller weddings they'll even keep playing gently between dances rather than putting on a playlist.
Can Sultans of Fling play our first dance?
Yes. The band can perform your first dance, so just let us know your choice when you book.
What are the performance times?
A typical booking runs from 8pm to midnight with a 30-minute break. Early arrival, a late finish after midnight and alternative timings are available on request.
What happens during the break?
The band provide a complimentary unmanned DJ service whenever they're not playing live.
Are smaller line-ups available?
Yes. Smaller line-ups are available for more intimate events, so ask our team about the options.
What equipment do Sultans of Fling bring?
They bring their own PA system and stage lighting, hold public liability insurance, use PAT-tested equipment and can work with venue sound limiters.
Do Sultans of Fling play events other than weddings?
Yes. They play Hogmanay parties, university events, corporate functions and private celebrations, and some venues book them year after year.
